How can I help you?

My name is Danielle, and I am a senior registered Clinical Psychologist with many years’ experience helping people overcome psychological distress and improve their wellbeing.  I offer psychological assessment and therapy, wellbeing courses, psychologically-informed antenatal classes, training and consultation, and clinical supervision for mental health clinicians.  Please explore my website for more information about me and what I do, or feel free to contact me.

As a qualified clinical psychologist I listen carefully to your experiences and hopes, drawing on my knowledge of psychological science as well as my experience from working with hundreds of clients, and together we can create a better understanding of why you are feeling the way you are, and what you need to move forwards.

I am trained in a range of therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT), Narrative Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).  After an initial assessment, we would plan a unique tailored approach using one or more of these therapies depending on your specific difficulties, strengths and personal preferences.

I work with adults and young people (age 16+) with difficulties including (but not limited to):

  • anxiety (including phobias, social anxiety, panic attacks, generalised anxiety, worry, obsessive compulsive disorder, physical anxiety symptoms, stress)
  • low self-esteem, self-critical thinking and feelings of guilt
  • depression and low mood
  • pre and postnatal distress (including birth trauma, postnatal depression, postnatal anxiety, adjustment to parenthood, dealing with difficult past experiences that may be triggered by becoming a parent)
  • trauma (including childhood traumatic memories, or difficult more recent events)
  • work related stress, imposter syndrome, perfectionism and burn out
  • navigating life transitions (e.g. relationship breakups, bereavement, loss or change of role)
  • parenting challenges (e.g. managing children’s distress, helping an anxious child, managing challenging behaviour, helping with fussy eating and sleep difficulties)
  • therapy for medical and mental health professionals (I understand the unique challenges of training for and working in these professions and have specific experience offering therapy to psychologists, therapists, medics and other mental health professionals)

I work with people from all backgrounds and warmly welcome all people, whether you consider yourself to be ‘different’ in some way or not, whatever your cultural background, religion, sexuality, race, gender etc.  I never make assumptions about you and strive to create a safe space to explore what matters to you.

Kindness, compassion and confidentiality are the cornerstones of my work; you can feel confident that you are in safe hands working with a regulated, qualified and experienced mental health professional.

Clinical psychologists are the most highly-trained providers of talking therapies, having completed doctorate level training which requires significant experience as well as specialist academic knowledge.  To find out more about my training and qualifications, please see About Me.

I understand how difficult it can be to seek help, to decide who to approach, and to take that step of making contact. The most important part of therapy is working with a clinician that you feel comfortable with, and who you feel you can get on with as a person.  I therefore offer a free 20 minute phone consultation to help us both consider whether this is the right service for you.  Contact me for a no-pressure, down-to-earth chat or feel free to book a phone call here using the online diary.

My Approach

My way of working is very collaborative – that is I see you very much as the expert on your experiences (with me having the expertise in psychology) so that we can work as a team to help you move towards your personal goals.  I will seek your thoughts and views about the direction of any therapy throughout the work we do.  I am usually described by others as approachable, kind and compassionate and I will always do my best to make you feel as comfortable as possible.  I also love clinical psychology, and enjoy understanding and teaching others about how our amazing (but very tricky and frustrating) brains work, and how we can best deal with them.

As my experience has been so varied, I can usually bring something fresh and different even if you have had some therapy before.  After an initial call I will be able to consider whether therapy with me might suit your needs, or to signpost you to another service if we feel that would be better for you.  Therapy with my service usually involves having the open space to talk about what is important to you, as well as some structure which may include teaching you some skills, practicing techniques together and setting challenges to complete between sessions.  The degree to which sessions are structured or more open is something I always discuss at the start of therapy and we can make a plan that fits your preferences and needs.

"Hi Danielle
I want to say a huge, huge thank you for all your support over the last 10 weeks. Genuinely, we had seen our little girl go from being happy, smiley and confident to being scared to embrace life. I waited to send this email as tonight was a big night.
XXX went bowling and for a meal, on her own, and she enjoyed it !!! There were wobbles but she managed them and is super proud. You have got her to this place. A massive thank you.
...please never lose sight of the difference you make with your profession.
Thanks for all your support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is therapy exactly?

Therapy usually involves meeting one-to-one for a number of sessions to work towards a specific goal that we would have established in our assessment appointments.  Sessions typically last 50 minutes-1 hour, and include opportunities to talk about whatever is on your mind as well as time to focus on working productively towards your goals.  The experience of therapy is as unique as you are, so it is hard to give a very clear idea of what to expect.  It usually involves talking about your current difficulties, as well as things that might have happened in the past, however you may not want to talk about your past experiences straight away or in too much detail and that is ok.  We would never put pressure on you to talk about something that you do not feel ready to share.

Therapy with us usually involves some practical skills-building work, based on your needs (like learning mindfulness skills, or how to challenge unhelpful thoughts, or relaxation etc) as well as space to talk openly.  It usually requires some between-session tasks as you are likely to see a greater benefit if you practice therapy skills more often and in ‘real life’ rather than just in the therapy session.  Some specific therapy approaches look quite different to others, for example if you were to do Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma then the sessions will be very different (involving eye movements or tapping) to other approaches to therapy like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT).

Therapy usually is a valuable investment in yourself, but it is not an easy thing to do.  Sometimes starting to talk about things can make you feel more vulnerable at first, so we would always think together about how to use your existing coping skills and build them up further if needed before doing the more difficult work.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions you need depends on the intensity and complexity of your current situation, and what your goals are for therapy.  We also of course keep in mind any financial (or insurance-policy related) limitations when thinking about what we will be able to achieve.  We offer both short-to-medium term therapy – generally somewhere between 6-20 sessions – as well as more open-ended long-term therapy.  We can discuss the likely number of sessions required during your first appointments.

Do we have to meet every week for one hour?

No.  Usually therapy is weekly for 50 minutes-1 hour, however if you prefer a different arrangement then we can try and accommodate that.  Weekly therapy can sometimes be most helpful particularly at the early stages of therapy as it helps keep momentum going, but it is quite usual to reduce the frequency to fortnightly or even less often as we approach the end of the work.  Some people prefer fortnightly therapy from the start and we will always accommodate this if we can.  It can be helpful to explore what is most likely to benefit you as of course everybody is different (some people find that having longer between sessions gives them more time to practice skills and think about the therapy, however others find that they lose momentum if they don’t meet often).  For some therapies even more than one session per week is sometimes useful, and again if there is availability in the diary to accommodate this then we will do so.  In some limited situations shorter sessions can also be considered (e.g. for younger children).

How much does it cost?

Please see the fees page for full details.

Can you see me urgently if I am (or a family member is) in crisis?

We are sorry that we cannot respond urgently or work with people during a mental health crisis situation.  In these circumstances please speak with your GP or in an emergency attend your local A&E department where you can access an urgent mental health assessment.

How do I know which psychologist to choose?

We understand it can be very difficult trying to find the right clinician to work with.  It is a minefield and can be very stressful which is the last thing you need when you are searching for psychological help.

Firstly, it is important to make sure that you work with someone who is properly qualified and regulated, as you can then be confident that they have undergone thorough training and will uphold high standards of practice and ethical conduct.  You can search for a psychologist under ‘Practitioner Psychologist’ on the HCPC website

Secondly, research suggests that finding somebody who is a good match for you, i.e. that you feel comfortable with as a person, is a key factor in therapy progress so it is important.  It is tricky to determine this before you have had a chance to get to know someone.  Have a look over the psychologist’s website, check that the kinds of things they usually work with or talk about resonate for you, make contact and ask questions, and use the first few contacts as a chance to get to know each other.  Most psychologists see the first one or two sessions as an ‘assessment’ process after which you and they can make a joint decision about whether you want to continue into therapy with them or whether to continue with someone else.  Finally, some psychologists (like us!) offer a free initial phone consultation before you book your first appointment, so if you are considering working with us and would like this opportunity to see how you feel chatting over the phone with us then please do contact us or book a free 20 minute phone consultation.

How do I arrange an initial appointment?

Feel free to contact us to talk through any questions you have first.  Once you have decided you would like to meet, you can either:

1. Simply get in touch via email, phone or using the contact us form.

2. Have a browse of the online diary and select ‘free 20 minute phone consultation’ and book yourself in at your convenience.  If you cannot find a suitable time please contact us as sometimes I can find some other options that do not always show up on the diary. https://manchester-psychologist.selectandbook.com/

After booking but before our first meeting, you will need to complete a client information form and sign the terms and conditions.  If you are using insurance we will need to collect your membership details and authorisation code.  These documents will be sent to you via email (or post if you prefer) and need to be returned before the first appointment.

Payment is due prior to each session.
